Q&A with Olivia Silva, second-year medical student To learn more about virtual shadowing, the AAMC spoke with a medical student and a physician and professor from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, both of whom recently participated in virtual shadowing. Through virtual shadowing, students can safely observe clinical interactions while eliminating potential exposure to COVID-19 and preserving personal protective equipment. With the recent rise in telemedicine, some premeds and medical students may find virtual shadowing opportunities an option while waiting for in-person shadowing to resume in the future. As the pandemic continues to upend our usual way of doing things, the process of learning about careers in medicine and gaining clinical experiences will also have to adapt. However, due to COVID-19, many hospitals are no longer able to offer in-person opportunities. Significant health care experience through shadowing or volunteer work indicates to admissions faculty that you have thoroughly explored a career in medicine and confirmed it is right for you.
